Background

Solar panels are the essential equipment in the renewable energy sector. Their condition and surface cleanliness directly influence power generation efficiency. Traditionally, inspection and cleaning of solar panels depend on manual labor. This approach is slow, labor-intensive, and risky, particularly in high-temperature and high-altitude environments. To overcome these issues, pilot projects were conducted at Xi’an Zhenhaiping Service Area and the Ningguo Yunlingwu 1GW Solar Project.

Our Solution

Jinghong developed a UAV-based new energy service system, built on its flight control platform and an advanced hotspot detection algorithm.

Inspection: The drone follows pre-set routes and uses thermal detection to fully cover solar arrays. This prevents missed areas in manual inspections and ensures no blind spots. Compared with traditional methods, efficiency has improved tenfold, and hotspot fault detection exceeds 90%. Results can be viewed in real time via the platform, allowing instant fault diagnosis.

Cleaning: Equipped with a specialised spraying device, the drone can clean 800 m² of panels per hour—more than 5 times faster than manual cleaning. After cleaning, solar power generation efficiency increased by over 8%, while worker safety was maintained by eliminating the need for risky manual work in hot, exposed environments.
