Drones for Ranching: Smart Livestock Management

Contents

Recently, I visited a friend who owns a massive ranch. As we made our rounds, admiring the landscape and the animals, he received a call from a farmhand stating that two cows had strayed from the herd and were nowhere to be found.

Immediately, vehicles, quadbikes, horses, and a whole cavalry were deployed to find the missing cattle. Luckily, I never leave my drone and said I could help. After about 10 minutes of taking off, quickly zooming, and scanning, I was able to locate the missing cattle, giving my friend a glimpse of what drones can do for him.

Drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in farming are transforming Livestock management by offering ranchers smarter, efficient ways to monitor their herds and pastures.

Today, we will cover the benefits, challenges, considerations, and how ranchers can deploy them on their farms.

How Drones Are Used For Livestock Monitoring

Now, let’s look at the various ways drones can be used on ranches.

Smarter Ranching with Drone-Based Livestock Monitoring

Searching for lost or stray animals

Like I mentioned how I helped my friend earlier, drones are very handy in searching for lost animals. Drones equipped with thermal cameras can track down lost animals day or night, even in reduced visibility conditions.

I was able to track down the animals much faster because drones can cover more ground at a time than people on the ground can, and it saves on manpower and fuel needed.

This trial, conducted by the University of Utah, demonstrates the effectiveness of drones in locating missing cattle in mountainous terrain and forests using thermal cameras, proving their efficacy on an actual ranch. Cattle can also be tagged with RFID or GPS tags, which makes it even easier to track them down, as you will know their location at all times.

Predator Control and Security

Cattle are vulnerable to predators such as coyotes and stray dogs. They are also vulnerable to theft, which could result in significant losses. Drones can help ensure the security of your livestock by offering a safe and stealthy way to monitor the herd and the perimeter.

They can also be used to investigate disturbances remotely without the intruders knowing they are being monitored. This makes it easier even to plan an ambush because you eliminate any surprises when you have an aerial view.

Herd Monitoring and Counting

I have visited a ranch and seen firsthand how hectic animal counting can be. Most of it is done manually, which introduces errors. This method is also slow, meaning that it will take the ranchers a considerable amount of time to realize some of the animals are missing.

Automated drone software can analyze aerial imagery to provide ranchers with accurate livestock counts, as it enables them to survey large or remote and inaccessible areas quickly. Since drones are easier to deploy, ranchers can do these counts regularly, quickly identifying any issues with the count. Precise herd counts are also vital for effective feed planning and resource management.

Pasture Management

Thriving pastures create the foundation for thriving livestock; hence, LiDAR, RGB, and multispectral cameras can be used to create 3D maps of pasture topography and analyze vegetation.

This helps ranchers assess the health of their pastures, identify weeds or erosion before they spread, and develop more informed grazing plans for healthier land and livestock. Multispectral data can help farmers identify crops with deficiencies, enabling them to take prompt action and increase the pasture output that can be stored for future use.

Drone data has also been effective in smart water management, where it helps create efficient water distribution maps, reducing water wastage. Larger spraying and spreading drones can be used to spray herbicides and pesticides on pasture, or to plant in vast areas quickly.

Infrastructure Inspection

If you own a large ranch, you know how long it would take to walk the entire property and inspect your structures. Damaged fencing or a failed water system can result in animals wandering off, being injured, or suffering from dehydration. Drones can quickly inspect ranch infrastructure, including water troughs, fences, and feeding supplies, which allows for anticipatory maintenance.

Disaster Preparedness and Response

Drones provide information quickly, which can be particularly helpful in emergency response situations. When natural disasters like floods, fire, or landslides occur, drones offer a quick and efficient way to locate your animals and plan rescue missions regardless of the time of day.

Herding and Animal Management

Drones can be equipped with speakers that play pre-recorded sounds to help move animals in the desired direction, which reduces stress and operational costs.

Early disease detection

Health issues are one of the leading causes of death in livestock. However, if an animal gets sick on the ranch, it would take a very long time to find it.

The longer you take to find it, the more severe the consequences become, as sickness derails animal movement, affecting the livestock’s health even further. The more they move in search of a balanced diet, the healthier they are.

And if it is a contagious disease, it could spread to the other animals. Let’s not forget that some animals will also die if you don’t reach them quickly enough.

Thermal imaging can help detect limping, injury, and distress by monitoring behavior, temperature, or isolation, as animal health issues often start subtly. High-resolution imagery drones can also be used to detect visible problems like pink eye in animals.

Benefits of Drones for Ranching

Below are the reasons ranchers are adopting drones.

  1. Time-saving– Drones cover a large area quickly, making them faster than walking or driving. Drones are also able to access hard-to-reach areas, such as those with rugged terrain or unsafe areas due to the presence of wild animals.
  2. Cost control –A whole cavalry of finding lost cattle can be replaced by a single drone, which is not that expensive to purchase or maintain. UAVs also use battery power, instead of fuel, saving on resources.
  3. Animal welfare and early detection of illness and injury– No one likes it when animals die from avoidable circumstances. Through early detection, one can preserve the welfare of their animals, ensuring they are always in optimum condition.
  4. Better decision-making– By providing real-time data on the animals, pasture, and infrastructure conditions, ranchers can now make informed decisions, leading to better ranch management.
  5. Ease of use and accessibility– Although there is a slight learning curve, drones are quite straightforward to operate and relatively easy to acquire. You can operate them manually or create pre-programmed flights over your ranch depending on the type of operation at hand.Benefits of Drones for Ranching

Legal And Safety Considerations

You can’t just buy a drone and start flying it. There are some legal issues you need to understand first. These include;

  • Check local aviation rules – Before taking off, ensure you understand the local aviation regulations applicable to your region. These include flight altitude and distance, drone weight, and operations that affect people and property, among others. You may also be required to apply for permissions from local authorities.
  • Pilot training and insurance– Ensure that drone operators undergo training and practice in safe areas, and consider obtaining insurance for liability and damage in the event of an incident. Pilot licensing is a requirement by regulators when flying drones commercially, and it protects you from any legal issues.
  • Privacy Policy– Drones equipped with powerful cameras and zoom capabilities can be easily misused. It is essential to exercise caution when using drones and adhere to all regulations governing data collection. When hiring a drone service provider, ensure they have a robust privacy policy in place.
  • Consider their impact on livestock – While drones offer several benefits, they also have some disadvantages that should be taken into account. For instance, drones can be loud, which may induce stress in animals. Weather such as wind can exacerbate this by making them seem louder. To prevent this, fly in optimum conditions and test different flying heights to determine the right parameters that have the least negative effects on your livestock.Fly Safe, Stay Compliant

What To Look For In A Drone For Ranching

All drones are built differently. Just because a drone has a camera doesn’t mean it will be suitable for use on a ranch. With that in mind, the following are some factors to consider when selecting a drone for your ranch.

FEATURE WHY IT MATTERS WHAT TO AIM FOR
1. Battery Need multiple flights a day 25-30+ minutes is the baseline for small to medium ranch work. 35‑45+ min is much better for intense operations. When using heavy payloads (such as thermal imaging, zoom, and additional sensors), flight time decreases. Consider carrying spare batteries or mobile charging stations.
2. Imaging Quality Good imaging quality, whether RGB, thermal, or multispectral, helps you to monitor animals in low light or at night. Good sensors also yield overall accurate data, facilitating better decision-making. Look for radiometric thermal sensors to accurately measure temperature. Resolutions of at least 320×256 are ideal. A zoom or telephoto lens is useful for scanning farther or seeing details.
3. Climate Resilience Dust, rain, wind, and heat can damage drones. Livestock areas often experience dust, dampness, solar glare, and heat. You want a drone that works in realistic ranch conditions and not just ideal weather. Look for IP ratings (indicating dust and water protection).
4. Object Recognition and Evasion The pasture environment has trees, fences, animals, poles, and wires. To fly safely, obstacle avoidance helps avoid accidents and damage. Some drones offer full 360° avoidance or high-coverage sensors, which are effective in both daylight and dawn/dusk conditions.
5. Maintenance / spare parts / local support Drones eventually break down, with their propellers, motors, sensors, and even batteries eventually failing. If support is far away, it results in prolonged downtime and increased costs. It is essential to ensure convenient access to spare parts and reliable maintenance services.

Additionally, staff training is essential.

Choose drone brands that offer service support and ensure spare parts are readily available. Spare batteries and propellers should be relatively cheap and easy to replace.
6. Safety & regulatory features If safety measures are not in place, drones can cause accidents, damage property, or injure animals. Look for drones that come with built-in safety tools and failsafe measures.
